Trenton, New Jersey – Smoke could become visible across parts of New Jersey today as crews carry out planned burns in multiple counties, potentially impacting air quality and visibility during peak daytime hours.
According to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service, prescribed fire operations are scheduled Tuesday in Ocean, Somerset, and Warren counties. These controlled burns are designed to reduce dry vegetation that can fuel fast-moving wildfires, especially as spring conditions continue to dry out forest floors.
Residents in and near these areas may notice smoke or a burning smell at times, particularly during the afternoon when conditions favor active burning. Drivers could encounter reduced visibility on local roadways near burn zones, especially in wooded or rural stretches.
Officials stress these are managed operations conducted under specific weather conditions to limit risk. However, the schedule may shift depending on wind and humidity levels throughout the day.
Anyone who sees smoke and is unsure of its source is urged to call 9-1-1 or 877-WARN-DEP. Authorities say additional prescribed burns are possible through early spring as part of ongoing wildfire prevention efforts.
