Honolulu, Hawaii – Heavy rain and strong winds are already impacting parts of Hawaii, with flooding concerns increasing as a Kona Low pushes across the islands through the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service, this system is drawing in deep tropical moisture, raising the risk for widespread heavy rainfall and flash flooding across multiple islands. Flood Watches are in effect, and saturated ground could quickly lead to runoff issues in low-lying and urban areas.
The Big Island faces additional hazards at higher elevations, where freezing rain, ice accumulation, and snowfall are possible above 12,500 feet. Travel to summit areas could become dangerous or restricted as conditions deteriorate.
Gusty winds tied to the system may down trees and power lines, especially in exposed coastal and higher terrain locations. Periods of intense rain could also reduce visibility on major routes, including sections of the Hawaii Belt Road.
Residents are urged to avoid flooded roadways, secure outdoor items, and prepare for possible power outages. Emergency officials stress that conditions can change rapidly during Kona Low events.
The storm is expected to linger through the weekend, with additional advisories and warnings likely as rainfall totals and impacts become clearer.
