Amarillo, TX – Severe thunderstorms could develop as early as Thursday afternoon across the Texas Panhandle, bringing the first round of damaging winds and large hail before a more active weekend pattern sets in.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, isolated to scattered storms will form between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. Thursday, mainly across the western and central Panhandle. These storms may produce wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail as large as half-dollar size, though tornado risk remains very low.

Cities including Amarillo, Dumas, Borger, and Hereford will be in the zone for potential storm development, especially along and west of I-27. While Friday brings additional storm chances, the severe threat remains limited at this time.

By Saturday and Sunday, storm coverage increases across the entire region, with multiple rounds of thunderstorms possible. Rain chances climb to as high as 70 to 80 percent, especially across central and eastern areas, raising concerns for large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornado potential.

Residents should prepare for rapidly changing conditions heading into the weekend. Stay weather-aware, secure outdoor items, and monitor updates as storm timing and intensity become clearer.
