Des Moines, IA – Drivers across southwest and south-central Iowa are facing slick, snow-covered roads this morning, with hazardous travel conditions impacting the early commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, a narrow band of snow continues to move through the region, leaving roads covered in snow and slush. The most affected areas include Council Bluffs, Atlantic, Creston, and Osceola, where road conditions have deteriorated quickly.
Highways along Interstate 80 and Interstate 29 are reporting partially to completely snow-covered conditions in spots, with reduced traction and longer stopping distances. Rural roads and untreated surfaces remain especially hazardous.
Farther east toward Des Moines, conditions improve slightly but drivers may still encounter wet or slushy stretches during the morning hours. Visibility could also drop briefly under heavier snow bands.
Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time. If possible, delay non-essential travel until conditions improve later this morning.
Road conditions are expected to gradually improve by late morning as snowfall tapers, but additional updates may be issued if conditions worsen.
