Sioux Falls, SD – Any spark could spread quickly across eastern South Dakota by midday Wednesday as gusty winds and dry air combine to create very high fire danger across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, west to northwest winds will increase to 25 to 35 mph by early afternoon, while relative humidity drops near 20 percent. These conditions will push much of southeast South Dakota, including Sioux Falls, Brookings, and Yankton, into the “very high” grassland fire risks category.

Areas along Interstate 29 and Interstate 90 face the greatest concern between noon and 6 p.m., where dry grasses and open fields can allow fires to spread rapidly. Surrounding communities such as Mitchell, Madison, and Worthington, Minnesota, will also see elevated to high fire danger under the same pattern.

Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, secure towing chains, and delay use of equipment that could produce sparks. Even small ignitions can move fast under these wind speeds.

Conditions may improve slightly after sunset as winds weaken, but elevated fire risk could linger into Wednesday night. Additional advisories or burn restrictions may be issued as conditions evolve.
