Binghamton, NY – Winter-like conditions are gripping central New York this morning, with snow showers and sub-freezing temperatures creating slick travel and a hard freeze risk overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, lake effect snow showers will continue through the morning before tapering off by early afternoon. While accumulation remains light, brief bursts of snow could reduce visibility and create slick spots on roads like I-81, Route 17, and I-88.
High temperatures today will struggle into the mid-30s to low 40s, running well below normal for April. The bigger concern arrives overnight, when temperatures drop sharply into the mid-teens to low 20s across much of the region, including Binghamton, Ithaca, Elmira, and Cortland.
These conditions could damage early vegetation and create isolated icy patches on untreated surfaces by early Wednesday. Residents should protect plants and use caution during the morning commute.
A rapid warmup begins Wednesday, with highs climbing into the 50s, then surging into the 60s and even 70s by Thursday and Friday. A cold front brings scattered rain showers late Friday into Saturday, with another round of widespread rain possible by early next week.
