San Francisco, CA – A new storm system will begin impacting the Bay Area within the next 24 to 36 hours, bringing rain, thunderstorms, and slick travel conditions through the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in San Francisco, isolated to scattered thunderstorms could develop as early as Thursday afternoon and continue into Friday, followed by more widespread and steady rainfall Saturday into Sunday. Rainfall totals across the region are expected to range from 0.5 to 1 inch, with locally higher amounts in elevated terrain.
Urban areas including San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, and Santa Rosa may see ponding on roadways during heavier showers, especially along high-traffic corridors like US-101, I-80, and I-880. Lightning poses an additional risk Thursday and Friday, particularly for outdoor activities.
While this system will bring beneficial rainfall, drivers should remain alert for reduced visibility and slick roads during peak travel times. Residents are advised to avoid flooded roadways and move indoors if thunderstorms develop.
Rain chances increase into the weekend, and additional advisories may be issued as the system strengthens and moves across Northern California.
