Madison, WI – Roads north of Madison could turn slick overnight as a light wintry mix develops, with the highest icing risk hitting just before the Wednesday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Milwaukee/Sullivan, a mix of freezing rain, sleet, and light snow is expected to develop between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m., with the steadiest precipitation occurring between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. Areas north of Madison, including Portage, Beaver Dam, and Fond du Lac, have the greatest chance of seeing a thin glaze of ice.
While overall precipitation amounts remain light, even a small amount of ice can create hazardous conditions on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads. Key routes such as I-39/90/94 and Highway 151 could see patchy slick spots during the early morning hours.
Farther south and east, including Madison, Janesville, and Milwaukee, precipitation chances remain lower, though a brief mix cannot be ruled out before temperatures rise.
By mid-morning Wednesday, temperatures warm enough to change all precipitation to rain, improving road conditions quickly. Drivers heading out before sunrise should slow down and remain alert for icy patches, with additional updates possible overnight.
