Frankfort, IL – Drivers in Frankfort are being urged to avoid several railroad crossings Friday morning after a CN train stopped because of a mechanical failure, blocking multiple intersections and creating the potential for traffic delays.
According to the Frankfort Police Department, the train is currently blocking Harlem Avenue, Pfeiffer Road and Sauk Trail west of Pfeiffer Road. The railroad is working to address the mechanical problem, but authorities said there is currently no estimate for how long the affected crossings will remain blocked.
The disruption could affect morning travel through Frankfort in Will County and drivers traveling toward other communities in the southwest Chicago suburbs. Motorists approaching the affected crossings should plan for additional travel time and avoid attempting to wait out the stopped train when alternate routes are available.
Police are recommending LaGrange Road, Center Road and Wolf Road as possible bypass routes while crews work to resolve the problem.
Drivers using those alternate roads could encounter heavier-than-normal traffic as vehicles are diverted away from the blocked crossings. Motorists should use additional caution and allow extra time when traveling through the area Friday morning.
The mechanical failure comes during the morning travel period, when prolonged railroad crossing blockages can quickly cause backups on nearby local roads.
There was no immediate indication from police of any crash or injuries connected with the stopped train. Authorities said the mechanical issue is being handled by the railroad.
The crossings will remain affected until the train can be moved. Drivers should continue using alternate routes until local authorities confirm the intersections have reopened.
