Fort Myers, FL – A Lee County man has been arrested on an aggravated animal cruelty charge after deputies said two kittens were killed and a third was injured at a Pine Manor home.
According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded after receiving a report that a man was allegedly attempting to drown and strike Luna, a 2-month-old kitten.
Witnesses identified the suspect as David Charette Jr., authorities said. They reportedly told investigators that Charette allegedly abused the family’s kittens in front of his teenage daughter as punishment when she “acted up.”
Detectives said additional allegations emerged during the investigation. In June, Charette allegedly killed a 1-month-old kitten using a rag soaked in bleach, according to the sheriff’s office.
In a separate incident, he allegedly killed a 3-month-old kitten using a blow dryer, investigators said.
Authorities learned that both kittens had reportedly been buried in the backyard of the property. Deputies recovered one of the animals while searching the home, but the second was not located, according to the agency.
Luna was taken to a local animal hospital, where she received treatment. The sheriff’s office said the kitten was recovering.
The agency announced the arrest Thursday but did not provide additional information about Charette’s bond, scheduled court appearances or whether other charges could be filed. The allegations have not been proven in court.
