Charleston, WV – Temperatures will drop to 31°F within hours overnight, putting early blooms, backyard gardens, and exposed plumbing at risk across a four-state region before the Tuesday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Freeze Warning runs from 1 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tuesday for much of West Virginia, along with parts of northeast Kentucky, southeast Ohio, and southwest Virginia. Forecasters say widespread sub-freezing air will settle in quickly after midnight, with the coldest readings just before sunrise.
Across West Virginia, cities including Charleston, Huntington, Parkersburg, Clarksburg, and Beckley could see frost form on elevated surfaces, especially bridges along I-64, I-77, and I-79. Rural valleys near Elkins, Buckhannon, and Marlinton may briefly dip below 31°F, increasing the risk to fruit trees and early-season crops. In Ashland, Kentucky, and Gallipolis, Ohio, similar impacts are expected in low-lying areas.
Residents should cover sensitive plants, bring potted vegetation indoors, and disconnect or insulate outdoor hoses. Farmers are urged to monitor vulnerable crops closely before sunrise.
Temperatures will rebound after 10 a.m., but additional cold alerts remain possible through midweek if clear skies persist overnight.
