Morgantown, WV – Temperatures will drop to 30°F by 1 a.m. Tuesday, putting crops, backyard gardens, and exposed plumbing at risk across northern West Virginia before the morning commute begins.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a Freeze Warning is in effect from 1 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tuesday for Marion, Monongalia, Preston, and Wetzel counties, including Morgantown, Fairmont, and Kingwood. Officials warn that several hours below 32°F could damage early spring vegetation and burst unprotected pipes.

In Morgantown and along the I-79 and I-68 corridors, the coldest readings are expected just before sunrise. Elevated areas like Coopers Rock and the ridges of eastern Monongalia County may see the longest duration of freezing temperatures. Gardeners and homeowners should cover sensitive plants, bring potted vegetation indoors, and insulate outdoor faucets.

Utilities could see minor impacts if pipes are left exposed, especially in rural areas of Preston and Wetzel counties. Residents are urged to disconnect hoses and allow a slow drip from faucets overnight to reduce pressure buildup.

Conditions improve quickly after 10 a.m. Tuesday as temperatures rise above freezing, but additional alerts remain possible if another cold night develops midweek.
