Matteson, Illinois – More than 100 workers will lose their jobs within weeks as Walmart moves to shut down a major facility in Matteson, delivering an immediate blow to the Chicago Southland workforce ahead of summer.

According to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filed March 2, the company will eliminate 111 positions when it closes its site at 21430 S. Cicero Ave. by May 29. The filing triggers the state’s 60-day warning requirement for mass layoffs under the WARN Act.

Walmart says the closure is part of a larger shift in its fulfillment network, with operations moving to other facilities. Employees were notified in February and are now facing a narrow window to secure transfers or new employment before the shutdown deadline.

Workers willing to relocate may qualify for a $7,500 bonus, relocation assistance, and training tied to advanced automation systems. Still, the loss of more than 100 jobs in a single site raises immediate concerns for local economic stability, especially along key corridors near Cicero Avenue.

State workforce agencies are expected to step in with job placement support as the deadline approaches. Additional layoffs or restructuring announcements could follow across Illinois as companies continue to consolidate operations into early summer.
