Valencia County, NM – A driver is facing aggravated DWI charges after New Mexico State Police say alcohol and excessive speed led to a head-on collision that injured those involved Friday.
According to the New Mexico State Police, officers responded on Aug. 1 to a head-on crash at the intersection of Meadowlake Road and Saxon Road in Valencia County. Preliminary information indicated the collision resulted in injuries and airbag deployment.
During the investigation, officers determined the driver of a gray Nissan SUV, identified as Isaiah Zamora, had allegedly consumed alcohol before the crash.
Investigators said Zamora was traveling at a high rate of speed when he crossed into the oncoming lane and struck a black Jeep SUV head-on.
Zamora was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. After being released, he was booked into the Valencia County Detention Center on charges of Aggravated DWI and Careless Driving.
State police did not release information about the condition of the occupants of the black Jeep or specify how many people were injured in the crash.
The investigation remains ongoing, and the charges are allegations. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
In a statement, New Mexico State Police said the crash serves as another reminder of the dangers of impaired driving and emphasized that troopers will continue working to remove impaired drivers from New Mexico roadways.
