Indianapolis, Ind. – Central Indiana is preparing for a soaking weekend as a slow-moving weather system brings widespread rain Saturday, with locally heavy downpours capable of producing flooding in some communities.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, rain will become more widespread Friday night before continuing through Saturday, when the heaviest rainfall is expected. Forecasters say rainfall totals of up to 2 inches are possible in parts of central Indiana, increasing the risk for localized flooding, especially in low-lying areas, urban locations and places with poor drainage.
The Weather Prediction Center has placed much of central Indiana under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 4) for excessive rainfall on Saturday, highlighting the potential for flooding from repeated or slow-moving downpours. While thunderstorms are expected, widespread severe weather is not anticipated. However, a few stronger storms cannot be ruled out.
Cities including Indianapolis, Lafayette, Kokomo, Muncie, Terre Haute, Bloomington, Columbus, Richmond and Crawfordsville should expect periods of moderate to heavy rain through much of Saturday. Drivers may encounter ponding on roadways, reduced visibility and rising water in flood-prone areas.
Residents are encouraged to clear storm drains, monitor updated forecasts and avoid driving across flooded roads. Even shallow water can conceal hazards and quickly become dangerous.
Rain is expected to gradually diminish later Saturday night into Sunday as the low-pressure system moves away, but any areas that receive repeated heavy downpours could continue to experience minor flooding. Additional flood advisories or warnings may be issued if rainfall rates become heavier than currently forecast.
