Tallahassee, Fla. – A much wetter weather pattern is settling across the Florida Panhandle, Big Bend and southwest Georgia, bringing daily rounds of showers and thunderstorms capable of producing 2 to 4 inches of rainfall, localized flooding and wind gusts as high as 60 mph through the weekend and into early next week.
According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, scattered to numerous thunderstorms will develop each afternoon and evening, though not every location will experience rain at the same time. The highest rainfall coverage is expected Saturday and Sunday, when rain chances climb to 90% to 95% across much of the region.
Communities including Tallahassee, Panama City, Apalachicola, Perry, Bainbridge, Valdosta, Albany, Dothan and Cross City should be prepared for repeated rounds of heavy rain. While widespread flooding is not expected, localized rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches, with isolated higher amounts, could quickly flood low-lying roads and poor drainage areas.
Stronger thunderstorms may also produce wind gusts between 40 and 60 mph, frequent lightning and brief reductions in visibility during heavy downpours. Drivers should allow extra travel time during afternoon and evening storms and never drive through flooded roadways.
Rain chances remain elevated into early next week before gradually decreasing by the middle of the week. Even on days with high rain probabilities, there will be extended periods of dry weather between storms.
Residents should keep umbrellas handy, monitor local weather alerts and have multiple ways to receive warnings if stronger thunderstorms develop.
