Lake Charles, La. – Residents across southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana face another day of dangerous heat Friday as temperatures climb into the middle and upper 90s, pushing heat index values as high as 109 degrees before a weak cold front brings increasing rain chances and slightly lower heat by the end of the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Lake Charles, afternoon temperatures will range from 92 to 98 degrees Friday, while humidity will drive apparent temperatures into the 103 to 108-degree range across much of the region. A few isolated locations could briefly reach a 109-degree heat index, especially during the mid- to late afternoon.
The hottest conditions are expected in communities including Lake Charles, Alexandria, Lafayette, Opelousas, Beaumont, Jasper, Woodville, Fort Polk, Jennings and Ragley, where prolonged outdoor activity could quickly lead to heat-related illnesses. Residents should drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks in air conditioning or shade, wear lightweight clothing and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the afternoon.
Relief will be slow to arrive. Saturday remains hot, with highs between 91 and 96 degrees and heat index values ranging from 101 to 107 degrees. Rain chances stay relatively low during the day, generally 10% to 30%, before increasing Saturday night.
A weak cold front is expected to move through the region on Sunday, bringing more widespread cloud cover and a 20% to 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms. While temperatures will still reach 90 to 96 degrees, the increased rainfall and clouds should provide a modest break from the prolonged stretch of oppressive heat.
Typical summertime weather returns early next week with highs in the lower to middle 90s, heat index values near 100 to 107 degrees, and isolated to scattered afternoon thunderstorms across southeast Texas, central Louisiana and southwest Louisiana.
Additional heat advisories could be issued if temperatures or humidity exceed forecast expectations.
