Billings, Montana – Residents across eastern Montana should prepare for thunderstorms to strengthen this afternoon, with the greatest risk centered east of Billings where storms could produce wind gusts over 60 mph, large hail and heavy rainfall before weakening during the evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Billings, showers and a few weak thunderstorms will continue shifting east through the morning before atmospheric conditions become more favorable for stronger storms later today. The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of eastern Montana under a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe thunderstorms.
The highest severe weather potential is expected between noon and 6 p.m. MDT, primarily across southeastern and eastern Montana. Communities including Miles City, Glendive, Baker, Broadus, Forsyth, Terry, Jordan and Wibaux could see the strongest storms as they track eastward through the afternoon and early evening.
Damaging straight-line winds remain the primary concern, with gusts exceeding 60 mph capable of downing tree limbs, causing isolated power outages and creating hazardous travel on Interstate 94 and other open roadways. Some storms may also produce large hail and locally heavy rainfall, leading to brief reductions in visibility and ponding on roads.
Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor furniture and other loose items before storms develop and ensure they have multiple ways to receive weather warnings. Those with outdoor plans should be prepared to seek sturdy shelter immediately if threatening weather approaches.
Thunderstorm activity is expected to diminish after sunset as storms move farther east, but the National Weather Service will continue monitoring conditions and could issue additional watches or warnings if stronger storms develop this afternoon.
