Gaylord, Michigan – Residents across northern Michigan can enjoy another warm summer day before a more unsettled pattern returns to close out the workweek. Sunshine and temperatures well into the 80s will dominate today, but showers and a few thunderstorms will become more common Friday and Saturday before cooler, drier air arrives to end the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, mostly sunny skies will prevail today with afternoon highs ranging from 79 to 89 degrees across northern Lower Michigan and the eastern Upper Peninsula. The only exception will be the eastern Upper Peninsula, where scattered showers and thunderstorms may develop later this afternoon and early evening. Most communities, including Gaylord, Traverse City, Petoskey, Alpena, Cadillac, and Grayling, are expected to remain dry through the day.

Rain chances expand Friday as showers and a few thunderstorms spread across the region. High temperatures will range from 77 to 88 degrees, with no widespread severe weather expected. Travelers on Interstates 75 and U.S. Highways 23, 31, and 131 should be prepared for occasional wet roads and reduced visibility during heavier showers.

Unsettled weather lingers into Saturday with additional showers and isolated thunderstorms. Cooler temperatures will hold afternoon highs between 75 and 81 degrees, making it the coolest day of the forecast period.

By Sunday, conditions improve as partly sunny skies return and temperatures settle into the 74 to 81 degree range. The drier weather will provide favorable conditions for boating, camping, and other outdoor activities across northern Michigan.

Residents should take advantage of today’s dry weather before keeping an umbrella handy Friday and Saturday. Additional forecast updates may be issued if thunderstorm coverage changes heading into the weekend.
