Pueblo, CO – Residents near the Aspen Acres burn scar should prepare for the potential of dangerous flash flooding Thursday as another round of showers and thunderstorms moves across southern Colorado.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Flash Flood Watch has been issued for the Aspen Acres burn scar from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, July 30.
Forecasters expect scattered to widespread showers and thunderstorms to develop during the afternoon and evening. Slow-moving storms capable of producing heavy rainfall could trigger life-threatening flash flooding and debris flows in and around the burn scar.
Officials warn that debris flows can carry mud, rocks, trees, and other debris downhill at high speeds, potentially damaging roads, blocking drainage systems, and threatening nearby infrastructure.
The National Weather Service says confidence is moderate to high that conditions will support heavy rainfall over the area, making it important for residents and anyone traveling near the burn scar to stay weather aware throughout the day.
Emergency officials recommend having multiple ways to receive weather warnings and being prepared to move to higher ground if a Flash Flood Warning is issued. Motorists should never attempt to drive through flooded roadways and should remember the safety message: “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”
