Boise, ID – Hazardous wildfire smoke will continue affecting much of southwest Idaho this week, bringing poor air quality while also keeping temperatures a few degrees cooler than they otherwise would be during the ongoing heat wave.
According to the National Weather Service in Boise, thick smoke across the region is limiting afternoon heating despite widespread highs remaining in the upper 90s and near 100 degrees in many lower-elevation communities. Cities including Boise, Nampa, Caldwell, Meridian, and Ontario are forecast to see temperatures generally in the upper 90s through Friday before a slight cooldown arrives this weekend.
While the smoke is providing modest relief from the extreme heat, forecasters emphasize that air quality remains hazardous in many locations. Residents, especially those with heart or lung conditions, older adults, children, and others sensitive to smoke, should limit prolonged outdoor activity and monitor local air quality conditions.
The weather pattern is expected to change over the weekend as a dry cold front moves through the region.
According to the National Weather Service, the front will bring gusty winds and much drier air, creating critical fire weather conditions across portions of southwest Idaho and eastern Oregon. Wind gusts could exceed 30 mph in some areas Saturday afternoon and evening, increasing the potential for rapid wildfire growth if new fires develop.
Officials urge residents to avoid activities that could spark a wildfire, including improperly extinguished campfires, dragging trailer chains, or using equipment that may produce sparks in dry vegetation.
Residents should continue monitoring the latest forecasts, air quality advisories, and any fire weather watches or warnings issued later this week.
