Lombard, IL – A late-night fire at a multi-family residential building in Lombard left several residents displaced after flames broke out in the attic and chimney of the structure Thursday night.

According to the Lombard Fire Department, crews were dispatched around 10:42 p.m. Thursday to the 2000 block of South Finley Road for a reported activated fire alarm that was quickly upgraded to a structure fire. First responders arrived within minutes and encountered a two-story, eight-unit residential building with visible fire conditions.

Firefighters deployed hose lines and worked to contain the blaze, successfully limiting the fire to the unit of origin. However, neighboring units sustained varying levels of smoke and water damage as crews worked to extinguish the flames.

Officials confirmed no injuries were reported among residents or emergency personnel. Despite that, all eight units in the building were impacted, resulting in the displacement of multiple residents.

Investigators later determined the cause of the fire to be a witnessed lightning strike, which ignited the chimney and attic area of the building.

Multiple neighboring agencies assisted at the scene, including fire departments from Villa Park, Oak Brook, Oak Brook Terrace, and York Center. Lombard Police also responded to provide traffic and crowd control during the incident.

Authorities have not released additional details regarding temporary housing assistance for displaced residents.
