The most intense heat is still ahead, and forecasters warn that today’s dangerous conditions will likely become even more extreme tomorrow.
According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, a Heat Advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. EDT (7 p.m. CDT) for much of the Florida Panhandle and Big Bend, with heat index values up to 112 degrees expected today. An Extreme Heat Watch follows for Tuesday, when dangerously hot conditions could push heat index values as high as 115 degrees. Officials warn that prolonged outdoor activity significantly increases the risk of heat-related illness, particularly for people working or exercising outside.
Tallahassee is expected to reach 98 degrees this afternoon under mostly sunny skies, with light winds providing little relief. Travel along Interstates 10 and U.S. 319 should remain dry for much of the day, although the combination of high humidity and intense sunshine will make vehicles and pavement dangerously hot. Keep water in the car, avoid leaving children or pets inside parked vehicles, and limit strenuous outdoor work during the hottest part of the afternoon.
The broader weather pattern keeps dangerous heat locked across much of the central and southern United States. While today remains mainly dry outside of a slight chance for an evening thunderstorm, the pattern begins to change by Wednesday, when a 70% chance of showers and thunderstorms arrives. Those storms could provide temporary relief from the heat while bringing locally heavy rainfall and lightning. Tornadoes are not expected to be the primary hazard.
Temperatures ease slightly later in the week, but highs remain in the lower to middle 90s with daily thunderstorm chances continuing across North Florida.
Drink water frequently, wear lightweight clothing, schedule outdoor activities during the early morning or evening, and check on elderly neighbors and anyone without reliable air conditioning.
The 6-to-10-day outlook continues to favor above-normal temperatures, indicating that summer heat will likely persist well beyond this week across the Florida Panhandle and Big Bend.
