Billings, MT – Drivers along the Montana-Wyoming border are facing near-whiteout conditions right now, with visibility dropping below half a mile and making travel on I-90 and nearby highways hazardous through the Friday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Billings, sharply reduced visibility is impacting southern Big Horn County in Montana and Sheridan County in Wyoming as of early Friday morning, with conditions expected to persist through at least late morning. Transportation officials warn that full or partial highway closures are possible, and travelers should check 511 systems before heading out.
Cameras along I-90 near Aberdeen Hill and the Montana-Wyoming state line show snow-covered roads with visibility at times under 2,600 feet. In northern Wyoming, US-14 near Dayton and routes around Sheridan are also seeing obscured lanes and drifting snow. These conditions can quickly disorient drivers, especially on elevated stretches and open plains.
Officials urge drivers to avoid non-essential travel, slow down, and keep headlights on. Emergency kits, full fuel tanks, and charged phones are recommended if travel cannot be delayed.
Conditions may gradually improve by midday Friday, but additional advisories or localized closures could be issued as visibility fluctuates.
