Indianapolis, Indiana – Hoosiers should prepare for the potential of strong to severe thunderstorms late tonight as a line of storms could move across parts of Indiana with damaging winds and localized flooding before the Monday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, thunderstorms are possible between 9 p.m. Sunday and 6 a.m. Monday, with damaging wind gusts posing the primary threat. Frequent lightning and localized flooding are also possible, although forecasters say confidence remains lower regarding the exact timing and where storms will develop.
Much of central and southern Indiana, including Indianapolis, Bloomington, Terre Haute, Lafayette, Kokomo, Richmond, Seymour and Vincennes, is under a Level 1 of 5 Marginal Risk for severe weather. A Level 2 of 5 Slight Risk extends into portions of north-central Indiana near the state line, where the potential for stronger storms is slightly higher.
Drivers traveling overnight on Interstates I-65, I-69, I-70 and I-74 should be prepared for rapidly changing weather if storms develop. Heavy downpours could reduce visibility and produce ponding on roadways, while isolated wind damage could bring down tree limbs and create scattered power outages.
Residents should have multiple ways to receive weather warnings before going to bed, especially since storms may arrive while many people are asleep. Charge mobile devices, secure loose outdoor items and move indoors immediately if severe thunderstorm warnings are issued.
Forecast confidence remains highest that storms will occur somewhere across the region, but the exact track and intensity remain uncertain. The National Weather Service will continue refining the forecast as new data becomes available, and additional watches or warnings could be issued overnight.
