Minneapolis, Minnesota – Dangerous heat and oppressive humidity will continue across Minnesota and western Wisconsin today before a chance of severe thunderstorms develops this evening, creating a dual threat of heat-related illnesses and damaging winds.
According to the National Weather Service in Chanhassen, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect through 9 p.m. today for parts of Minnesota, while a Heat Advisory continues into Monday for portions of the region. Heat index values are expected to reach 100 to 110 degrees this afternoon, with the highest readings across southern and central Minnesota. Cities including the Twin Cities, Mankato, Albert Lea, St. Cloud, Redwood Falls, Willmar and Hutchinson are expected to experience the most dangerous conditions. Overnight temperatures near 80 degrees in the Twin Cities will provide little relief from the heat.
The severe weather threat increases between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. According to the Storm Prediction Center, much of Minnesota and western Wisconsin is under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe thunderstorms. Storms are expected to develop across northern Minnesota during the afternoon before moving southeast through the evening. While many locations may remain dry, any storm that develops could become severe.
The primary hazards include damaging wind gusts and large hail, with the best chance for an isolated tornado located across western Wisconsin. Communities from Brainerd and Mora through the Twin Cities and toward St. Croix Falls, Red Wing and Eau Claire should closely monitor changing weather conditions.
Residents should avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, stay hydrated, wear lightweight clothing and never leave children or pets in parked vehicles. Have multiple ways to receive weather warnings this evening, especially if spending time outdoors or traveling.
Humidity is expected to ease gradually Monday, but thunderstorms and dangerous heat could still affect parts of the region before cooler, less humid air arrives later in the week.
