Burlington, Vermont – A quiet start to the week across Vermont and northern New York will give way to a much wetter pattern by the middle of the week, with widespread showers, thunderstorms and pockets of heavy rainfall expected to develop late Tuesday and continue into Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, there is only a 20% to 30% chance of an isolated shower across northern New York today, while most of Vermont remains dry. Rain chances remain relatively low through Monday before increasing Tuesday as a stronger weather system approaches from the west.
Forecast confidence rises significantly by late Tuesday into Wednesday, when precipitation probabilities increase to 75% to 90% across much of the region, including Burlington, Montpelier, St. Albans, Middlebury, Rutland, Newport, Plattsburgh, Massena, Malone and Saranac Lake. Embedded thunderstorms are expected within the broader area of rain, with localized heavy downpours creating the potential for ponding on roads and isolated flooding in poor drainage areas.
Motorists should be prepared for reduced visibility and water-covered roadways during periods of heavier rainfall, particularly during the Wednesday morning commute. Anyone with outdoor plans during the middle of the week should monitor the latest forecasts, as thunderstorms could produce brief gusty winds and dangerous lightning.
Dry conditions are expected to dominate through the first part of the week before the wetter pattern settles in. Additional advisories or flood-related alerts may be issued if confidence in heavier rainfall amounts continues to increase.
