Indianapolis, Indiana – Severe storms are expected to develop within hours across central Indiana, with damaging winds and heavy rain threatening the evening commute in Indianapolis and surrounding areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, isolated strong to severe thunderstorms will form between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. Friday, with all hazards possible. Wind gusts could reach up to 60 mph, and hail up to 1 inch in diameter may accompany stronger storms.

The greatest impacts are expected along major corridors including I-65, I-70, and I-69, where sudden downpours could reduce visibility and lead to water-covered roads. Cities such as Carmel, Fishers, Bloomington, and Muncie remain under a marginal risk, meaning storms may be scattered but capable of producing localized damage.

Localized flooding is also a concern, particularly in low-lying and poor drainage areas where heavy rainfall may overwhelm systems in a short period of time.

Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items, avoid driving through flooded roadways, and ensure multiple ways to receive warnings through the evening hours.

Storms are expected to weaken later tonight, but additional alerts may be issued if conditions intensify.
