Minneapolis, Minnesota – Travel conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly by Friday evening as a mix of snow and freezing rain spreads across Minnesota, creating icy roads and reduced visibility through the overnight hours.

According to the National Weather Service in the Twin Cities, a winter system will bring a combination of rain, snow, and freezing rain through Saturday morning, with the heaviest impacts shifting slightly south. Ice accumulation between 0.10 and 0.50 inches is possible from central Minnesota into northwest Wisconsin, especially on elevated surfaces like bridges and overpasses.

Snowfall totals will vary sharply by location. Northern areas including Alexandria and Little Falls could see 3 to 7 inches, while St. Cloud may pick up 2 to 3 inches. The Twin Cities metro is expected to see lighter totals, generally around 1 inch or less, but icing remains a concern.

Roads across I-94, Highway 10, and surrounding rural routes may become slick overnight, with the highest risk for hazardous travel before sunrise Saturday. Downed tree branches and isolated power outages are possible where ice accumulates most.

Drivers should avoid overnight travel if possible, slow down on untreated roads, and keep emergency kits in vehicles. Conditions are expected to improve gradually by late Saturday morning, but advisories and warnings remain in effect.
