Amarillo, Texas – Triple-digit heat will once again dominate the Texas Panhandle today, although a few isolated thunderstorms could develop late this afternoon and evening, offering only spotty relief for a small number of communities.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, there is only a 10% to 20% chance of thunderstorms developing between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. across parts of the Panhandle. Most locations will remain dry, but any storm that forms could produce localized heavy rainfall, creating isolated flooding concerns in a short period of time.
The greatest opportunity for development stretches from areas near Dalhart, Dumas, Gruver and Perryton south toward Amarillo, with isolated activity also possible near Borger, Pampa, Claude and Stratford. Storm coverage is expected to remain sparse, and many communities may not receive any rainfall.
Despite the slight rain chance, dangerous heat remains the primary concern. Afternoon highs will climb into the upper 90s to around 107 degrees, with prolonged exposure increasing the risk of heat-related illness. Anyone spending time outdoors should drink water frequently, take breaks in air-conditioned buildings or shaded areas, and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day.
If a thunderstorm develops, motorists should watch for sudden reductions in visibility and brief water-covered roads caused by localized heavy downpours.
The prolonged heat wave is expected to continue into next week, with additional heat-related advisories or warnings possible as temperatures remain well above normal.
