Hastings, Nebraska – Dangerous summer heat has returned to south central Nebraska and north central Kansas, where heat index values are expected to reach 105 to 110 degrees through Monday. The prolonged stretch of hot and humid weather has prompted a Heat Advisory as officials warn of an increased risk for heat-related illnesses.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, the Heat Advisory is in effect from noon Saturday until 10 p.m. Monday for all of south central Nebraska and north central Kansas. Afternoon high temperatures will climb into the upper 90s to the lower 100s, with humidity pushing heat index values into the 105 to 110-degree range during the hottest part of each day.
Communities including Hastings, Grand Island, Kearney, Holdrege, Ord, York, Hebron, Superior, McCook, and Smith Center, Kansas, should expect dangerous outdoor conditions throughout the weekend and into early next week. Travelers on Interstates 80 and 70, along with U.S. Highways 6, 81, and 281, should carry extra water and be prepared for extreme heat if vehicles become disabled.
Health officials urge residents to drink plenty of water, avoid prolonged outdoor activity during the afternoon, wear lightweight and light-colored clothing, and spend time in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible. Outdoor workers should take frequent breaks in the shade, and neighbors are encouraged to check on older adults and others without reliable cooling. Children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles.
The dangerous heat is expected to persist through Monday evening before temperatures gradually ease. Additional heat advisories or warning upgrades remain possible if the intensity or duration of the heat increases.
