Hastings, Nebraska – Dangerous summer heat is set to grip south central Nebraska and north central Kansas this weekend, with a multi-day Heat Advisory in effect as temperatures soar into the triple digits and heat index values climb as high as 110 degrees.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Heat Advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. Saturday through 10 p.m. Monday for all of south central Nebraska and north central Kansas. High temperatures will steadily increase through the weekend, with Sunday and Monday expected to be the hottest days of the stretch.
Afternoon highs are forecast to reach the upper 90s to 105 degrees, while peak heat index values are expected to range from 100 to 110 degrees Sunday and Monday. Communities including Hastings, Grand Island, Kearney, Holdrege, Lexington, York, Hebron, Ord, Phillipsburg and Smith Center should prepare for prolonged periods of dangerous heat.
Forecast highs include around 99 degrees in Hastings Sunday and 101 degrees Monday, 100 degrees in Grand Island Sunday with 99 Monday, and 100 to 101 degrees in Kearney, Lexington and York through the hottest part of the event. Overnight temperatures will remain warm, offering limited relief.
Residents should avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the afternoon, drink plenty of water, wear lightweight clothing and spend time in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible. Check on older adults, young children and neighbors without reliable cooling, and never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles.
The National Weather Service warns that prolonged exposure to the combination of high temperatures and humidity can quickly lead to heat-related illnesses. Additional heat alerts may be issued if conditions become even more extreme.
