Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Roads could turn slick before sunrise Friday as a wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow spreads across eastern South Dakota and southwest Minnesota overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, precipitation will begin late tonight and continue through most of Friday, with the greatest impacts expected north of Interstate 90. Ice accumulations could reach up to 0.20 to 0.25 inches in areas near Brookings, Watertown, and into southwest Minnesota, while snowfall totals of 1 to 3 inches are likely in the same corridor.
Sioux Falls, Mitchell, and Huron sit near the transition zone, where lighter ice and snow totals are expected, but even minor accumulations could create hazardous travel during the Friday morning and evening commutes. Roads including I-90 and Highway 14 may become slick, especially on bridges and overpasses.
Farther south toward Yankton and Sioux City, precipitation may fall more as rain, limiting ice buildup but still causing wet road conditions.
Residents should allow extra travel time, check road conditions before heading out, and carry emergency supplies in vehicles. The system tapers off late Friday night into early Saturday, but lingering slick spots may persist into the weekend with additional advisories possible.
