Cheyenne, Wyoming – Travel across southern Wyoming could become nearly impossible within hours as strong winds and heavy snow combine to create whiteout conditions through Friday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the Sierra Madre Range where snowfall totals could reach 12 to 18 inches, paired with wind gusts exceeding 50 mph. These conditions are expected to intensify overnight and persist through at least Friday afternoon, reducing visibility to near zero at times.

The Northern Laramie Range is also expected to see accumulating snow, though slightly lower totals, while foothill areas near Laramie and Cheyenne could pick up between 3 and 10 inches. Interstate 80, especially between Rawlins and Laramie, faces the highest risk for closures due to blowing and drifting snow. Arlington and Elk Mountain are particularly vulnerable to crosswinds that can overturn high-profile vehicles.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, delay non-essential travel, and prepare for rapidly changing road conditions. Emergency kits with blankets, food, and chargers are strongly recommended for anyone who must travel.

The storm system remains active through Friday afternoon, and additional advisories or closures are likely as conditions worsen.
