Indianapolis, IN – Two Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were wounded and a suspected gunman was killed during an officer-involved shooting Wednesday night on the city’s east side, according to police.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), officers from the East District responded shortly before 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, 2026, to reports of a disturbance involving multiple people in the 8000 block of East 37th Street. A 911 caller reported that a man involved in the disturbance might be armed with a gun.
Police said officers encountered a man outside the residence. During the encounter, the man allegedly opened fire, striking two IMPD officers. Authorities said at least three officers returned fire, striking the suspect.
Officers immediately rendered medical aid. One wounded officer was transported to a hospital by another officer in a patrol vehicle, while the second officer was taken by ambulance. IMPD said both officers are in stable condition.
The suspect was also transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to police.
Investigators said the suspect’s firearm was recovered at the scene. Officials also confirmed that the officers who discharged their weapons were equipped with body-worn cameras, which were activated during the incident.
The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency and the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office responded to assist with the investigation. The Marion County Coroner’s Office will determine the official cause and manner of the suspect’s death and release the individual’s identity after next-of-kin notification.
IMPD’s Critical Incident Response Team is leading the criminal investigation, while Internal Affairs is conducting a separate administrative review. As is standard procedure, the involved officers have been placed on administrative leave.
Police said there is no ongoing threat to the community and no outstanding suspect.
