Champaign, IL – A second teenager has been arrested in connection to a fatal shooting that allegedly unfolded during a fight at a Champaign shopping center last month, leaving a 16-year-old dead.
According to Champaign Police, the incident happened Saturday, March 21 at approximately 6:14 p.m. in the parking lot of the Market Place Shopping Mall. Officers responded to reports of a large fight where at least one firearm was allegedly discharged, striking the teenage victim. First responders, alongside the Champaign Fire Department, administered emergency medical aid before the victim was transported to a local hospital, where they were later pronounced deceased at 11:44 p.m.
Investigators say a 15-year-old suspect was initially located and arrested following the shooting. On Thursday, a second 15-year-old was taken into custody on a warrant for aggravated battery with a firearm in connection to the same incident. Authorities say both suspects allegedly played roles in the altercation that led to the deadly shooting.
Due to their ages, additional identifying information about the suspects has not been released, in accordance with Illinois law.
Police emphasize the case remains an active and ongoing investigation, and additional arrests could be possible as detectives continue reviewing evidence and witness accounts.
