Jackson, Miss. – Dangerous heat stress will continue across much of central Mississippi through at least Friday, with hot afternoons and humidity combining to produce heat index values near 105 degrees. The prolonged heat will increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for those spending extended periods outdoors.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, high temperatures will climb into the low to middle 90s today and Friday across much of the forecast area. While actual air temperatures will remain below the century mark, the combination of heat and humidity will make it feel significantly hotter, with peak heat index values approaching 105 degrees during the afternoon.
Much of central and western Mississippi is expected to experience a Level 1 (Limited) HeatRisk, meaning prolonged outdoor activity could lead to fatigue and heat exhaustion, especially for people who are not acclimated to the heat or who do not take frequent breaks.
Communities including Jackson, Vicksburg, Greenwood, Greenville, Brookhaven, Philadelphia, Meridian and Hattiesburg should prepare for another stretch of oppressive afternoon conditions through the weekend. The National Weather Service expects the heat stress to persist over the coming days.
Residents should drink plenty of water throughout the day, wear lightweight and light-colored clothing, apply sunscreen and schedule strenuous outdoor work for the early morning or late evening whenever possible. Avoid alcohol during the hottest part of the day, and never leave children, older adults or pets inside parked vehicles.
The National Weather Service will continue monitoring heat conditions, and additional heat-related advisories may be issued if temperatures or humidity increase further through the weekend.
