Washington, DC – A sharp temperature divide is unfolding across the Mid-Atlantic this afternoon, creating a nearly 30-degree swing between cooler northern areas and much warmer conditions to the south.
According to the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington office, cloud cover is holding temperatures in the 50s across Washington, DC and Baltimore, while sunshine is allowing areas farther south and west to surge into the upper 70s and low 80s. Charlottesville is leading the warm-up near 80 degrees, with Harrisonburg close behind in the upper 70s.
Meanwhile, Baltimore is struggling to reach the low 50s, and Washington, DC remains in the mid-50s through the afternoon hours. The dividing line between warm and cool air is creating noticeably different conditions across short distances, impacting travel, outdoor plans, and energy use.
Fredericksburg and areas along the I-95 corridor are seeing a middle ground, with temperatures climbing into the upper 60s before gradually cooling this evening.
Residents should prepare for rapidly changing conditions depending on location, especially when traveling between regions.
This temperature contrast will ease overnight as readings begin to level out, but additional shifts are possible heading into the weekend.
