Glasgow, Mont. – A prolonged stretch of dangerous summer heat is expected to grip northeast Montana beginning Friday morning, with afternoon temperatures climbing as high as 108 degrees and little overnight relief through the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Glasgow, an Extreme Heat Watch is in effect from Friday morning through Sunday evening for much of northeast Montana. Afternoon highs are forecast to range from 95 to 108 degrees, while overnight lows will only cool into the 60s and 70s, limiting the body’s ability to recover from daytime heat.
The watch includes communities such as Glasgow, Wolf Point, Malta, Jordan, Circle, Glendive, Sidney, Culbertson, Zortman, Winnett, Terry and Whitewater, where several consecutive days of extreme heat are expected. The combination of prolonged high temperatures and warm nights will significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for those without access to air conditioning or who spend extended periods outdoors.
Residents are encouraged to avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest part of the afternoon, drink plenty of water even if they do not feel thirsty and take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned locations. Employers with outdoor crews should adjust work schedules when possible and monitor workers for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
Older adults, young children, people with chronic health conditions and pets are especially vulnerable during extended heat events. Never leave children or animals unattended inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can become life-threatening within minutes.
The National Weather Service may upgrade the watch to an Extreme Heat Warning if confidence in the dangerous conditions continues to increase. Residents across northeast Montana should monitor the latest forecasts and be prepared for several days of potentially hazardous heat through Sunday evening.
