Mount Olive, N.J. – New Jersey’s severe weather outbreak on Tuesday produced at least four confirmed tornadoes, including three EF-1 tornadoes in Morris County and an EF-0 tornado in Cape May Point, according to preliminary damage surveys released by the National Weather Service.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Philadelphia/Mount Holly and Pittsburgh, survey teams found tornado damage in Morris and Cape May counties while investigators are still seeking additional storm damage reports from parts of western Pennsylvania, northern West Virginia and eastern Ohio that may help determine whether more tornadoes or significant straight-line wind events occurred.
The strongest tornado surveyed so far touched down in the Lower Berkshire Valley section of Roxbury Township in Morris County between 2:15 and 2:17 p.m. EDT. The EF-1 tornado produced estimated peak winds of 100 to 110 mph, traveled 0.6 miles, and reached a maximum width of 250 yards. No injuries or fatalities were reported.
Another EF-1 tornado tracked from Mount Olive into Stanhope between 2:00 and 2:05 p.m., packing estimated winds of 80 to 90 mph along a 1.4-mile path that was also 250 yards wide. A third EF-1 tornado developed in Pine Brook in Montville Township between 2:50 and 2:51 p.m., producing 80 to 90 mph winds along a 0.2-mile path with a maximum width of 70 yards.
Farther south, survey teams confirmed an EF-0 tornado in Cape May Point between 6:15 and 6:16 p.m. The tornado produced estimated peak winds of 60 to 70 mph, traveled 0.3 miles, and reached a maximum width of 30 yards. No injuries or deaths were reported in any of the confirmed tornadoes.
The National Weather Service emphasized that these findings are preliminary and could be refined as damage surveys continue. Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh office is asking residents in Venango, Forest, Clarion and Jefferson counties in Pennsylvania, Carroll County, Ohio, and Monongalia and Preston counties in West Virginia to submit storm damage reports, photos or videos from Tuesday’s storms to assist ongoing investigations. Additional survey results or updates may be issued as more information becomes available.
