Mobile, Alabama – Beachgoers along the Gulf Coast face life-threatening swimming conditions right now, as strong rip currents continue to impact coastal Alabama and the Florida Panhandle through the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Mobile, a high rip current risk remains in effect for beaches in Mobile and Baldwin counties, including Dauphin Island, Gulf Shores, and Orange Beach, as well as popular destinations like Pensacola Beach, Navarre Beach, and Destin. The dangerous conditions are expected to persist through Sunday night, with powerful, fast-moving currents capable of pulling swimmers away from shore within seconds.
Officials warn that the surf is hazardous for all skill levels, not just inexperienced swimmers. Multiple beaches across Escambia, Santa Rosa, and Okaloosa counties are under the same high-risk designation, with red flags flying to signal dangerous water conditions. Strong onshore flow is fueling continuous wave action, increasing the likelihood of rip current formation near piers and sandbars.
Visitors are strongly urged to stay out of the water. If caught in a rip current, float and swim parallel to shore rather than fighting the current. Lifeguards and local officials stress that even shallow water entries can quickly turn dangerous under these conditions.
The high risk remains in place through Sunday evening, and additional advisories may be issued if conditions fail to improve heading into early next week.
