Springfield, Illinois – Severe storms are expected to develop within the next few hours across central Illinois, with fast-moving cells capable of producing 60 mph winds and isolated tornadoes beginning early this afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, thunderstorms will first form near and west of Interstate 55 early this afternoon, including areas around Galesburg, Jacksonville, and Springfield. Storms will then rapidly expand eastward into Champaign, Danville, and Effingham between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., moving at speeds of 50 to 60 mph.

The primary threats include damaging straight-line winds, large hail, and a few tornadoes, with little time to react once warnings are issued due to the fast storm motion. Key travel routes such as I-55, I-72, and I-74 could see rapidly deteriorating conditions during peak travel hours.

Residents are urged to stay weather-aware, enable emergency alerts, and identify a safe shelter location ahead of time. Outdoor activities should be adjusted or postponed as storms approach, especially during the mid- to late afternoon window.

Storms will continue pushing east through the evening, with additional warnings likely as conditions evolve across the region.
