Minneapolis, Minnesota – Roads across the Twin Cities and southeastern Minnesota are turning icy right now as freezing rain and sleet create dangerous travel conditions during the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in the Twin Cities, a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain is ongoing this morning, with the greatest icing risk occurring during the coldest early hours. Ice accumulation between 0.10 and 0.50 inches is possible from the Twin Cities southeast into Red Wing, Rochester, and western Wisconsin, including Eau Claire.

Snow is more dominant across western and central Minnesota, with totals of 2 to 4 inches expected in areas like Alexandria, St. Cloud, and Willmar. Meanwhile, a corridor of sleet and freezing rain stretches along and south of I-94 and I-90, where untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses are becoming slick.

Travel along I-35, I-94, and Highway 52 may be significantly impacted, with slower commute times and an increased risk of accidents. Elevated surfaces are icing first, and tree limbs could begin to sag if ice accumulates further.

Drivers are urged to slow down, allow extra time, and avoid sudden braking. Conditions should gradually improve later today, but another round of wintry weather is expected Friday night into the weekend, with additional alerts likely.
