Olympia, WA – A vehicle fire claimed the life of an infant Tuesday afternoon in Thurston County despite rescue efforts by family members, neighbors, and emergency responders, according to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office, deputies and fire personnel responded at approximately 12:10 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, to the 300 block of 93rd Avenue SE after receiving reports of a vehicle fully engulfed in flames with an infant still inside in a child safety seat.
Authorities said the infant died in the fire despite rescue attempts by the child’s father, nearby residents, and emergency personnel.
The preliminary investigation indicates the father and his three children, ages 12 years, 2 years, and 5 months, were preparing to leave their residence. Investigators said the father briefly returned inside the home while the children remained in the running vehicle.
A short time later, smoke began filling the vehicle. According to the sheriff’s office, the 12-year-old was able to remove the 2-year-old from the vehicle before running inside to alert the father. By the time they returned outside, the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames.
Authorities said the father and several neighbors attempted to extinguish the fire and rescue the infant. Several people sustained burn injuries during the rescue efforts. The father, the injured individuals, and the surviving children were transported for medical evaluation and treatment.
Detectives with the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office are working alongside local fire investigators and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to determine the cause of the fire. Officials said the investigation remains ongoing, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
