Kansas – Damp pavement and thick, humid air are already setting the stage for another round of unsettled spring weather, with storm chances increasing as the day unfolds across south-central Kansas.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, scattered showers remain possible early, followed by a more organized round of thunderstorms developing by Friday afternoon into the evening. Some storms may produce heavy rainfall and localized flooding, especially east of the Kansas Turnpike .
Wichita starts mild, with temperatures climbing into the upper 70s under partial sunshine. Winds shift southwest and increase through the afternoon, with gusts near 30 mph. That added warmth and moisture will fuel instability heading into Friday, when storm coverage becomes more widespread.
Drivers along I-135, Kellogg (US-54), and nearby routes should stay alert late Friday as visibility may drop quickly in heavy rain. Ponding on roads could develop within minutes during stronger downpours. If thunder roars, move indoors.
There’s also a secondary concern. Fire danger increases briefly across central Kansas Friday and Saturday due to gusty winds and dry pockets between storms. Conditions may shift quickly block by block.
Looking ahead, calmer air returns for the first weekend of April. Sunshine dominates Saturday and Sunday, with highs rebounding into the upper 60s. That stretch offers a break for outdoor plans before another mild pattern settles in next week with highs near 70.
