Oregon – Rain taps steadily across Eugene this morning, soaking roads and sidewalks, but a sharp temperature drop is already lining up that could bring frost and freezing conditions within hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Portland, a Freeze Watch remains in effect from evening through early morning, with temperatures expected to fall between 29°F and 32°F across the southern Willamette Valley . Showers continue through the day before skies begin to clear, setting the stage for rapid cooling.
Across Eugene, Springfield, and Corvallis, roads stay wet through midday with scattered showers and even a slight chance of thunder. Drivers along I-5 should expect slick pavement and brief visibility drops during heavier bursts. Conditions improve later in the day as clouds break.
That clearing is where the bigger concern begins. As skies clear and winds calm, temperatures will fall quickly after sunset. Frost can develop fast, especially in low-lying areas and open fields. Gardens, vineyards, and early spring crops face the highest risk.
Residents should cover sensitive plants, bring potted plants indoors, and protect exposed outdoor plumbing. This is a classic spring “flash freeze” setup, where daytime moisture refreezes on surfaces by early morning.
By Friday afternoon, sunshine returns with highs near the low 60s, helping thaw conditions quickly. The first weekend of April turns much milder, with temperatures climbing into the upper 60s Saturday and mid-70s Sunday.
Looking ahead, early next week keeps a mild spring pattern in place, though light rain chances may return by Tuesday.
