Colorado – Dry grass rustles and the air feels unusually crisp as winds begin to pick up across Pueblo, setting the stage for fire conditions that can escalate within minutes.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Red Flag Warning is in effect through this evening, with southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph and gusts reaching up to 35 to 40 mph. Relative humidity could drop as low as 11 percent, creating an environment where fires can start and spread rapidly.
Conditions will worsen through the afternoon. Warm temperatures near 71°F combine with dry air and wind, increasing the risk along I-25 and across open grasslands in Pueblo, Las Animas, and Otero counties. Even small sparks from vehicles or equipment could ignite fast-moving fires.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and use extreme caution with anything that could create a spark. Strong gusts may also cause sudden visibility issues in blowing dust, especially in rural areas.
By evening, winds gradually ease, but dry conditions linger. Cooler air settles in overnight, with temperatures dropping into the 30s. While calmer, the landscape remains vulnerable after a day of drying winds.
Friday brings quieter weather with sunshine and highs in the mid-50s. The weekend trends warmer and calmer, with highs climbing into the 60s under mostly sunny skies, offering a break from critical fire conditions.
Looking ahead, slight rain chances return early next week, along with a gradual warming trend into the upper 60s and low 70s.
If you’re outside today, stay alert and avoid any activity that could spark a fire. Are winds picking up in your area yet?
