Michigan – Snow turns heavier, then quickly mixes with sleet and freezing rain across the Upper Peninsula, creating slick, slushy roads that worsen by the hour.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect with snow and sleet totals between 1 and 3 inches and ice accumulations up to 0.25 inches. Wind gusts near 35 mph are increasing the risk of blowing snow, reduced visibility, and scattered power outages.

Across Marquette, Gwinn, and along US-41, roads are becoming increasingly hazardous. Snow-covered pavement is transitioning to icy patches, especially on bridges and untreated roads. Drivers should slow down and expect sudden changes in traction. Even short trips may take significantly longer.

Temperatures are expected to climb above freezing later today, pushing the system toward rain. While that may reduce icing, it will leave behind slushy, water-covered roads and poor visibility during heavier bursts. Gusty winds continue to impact exposed areas near Lake Superior.

Meteorologists are now tracking a second round of mixed precipitation heading into the first weekend of April. Rain may flip back to freezing rain or snow at times Friday night into Saturday, prolonging travel concerns. Sunday brings colder air and lingering snow showers, keeping a wintry feel in place.

Looking ahead, early next week remains chilly with additional chances for light snow. However, longer-range signals point toward a gradual warm-up later next week, hinting at more consistent spring conditions.

This is a classic Upper Peninsula spring storm, where conditions change quickly and travel becomes unpredictable. Prepare for delays and keep emergency supplies in your vehicle.
