Chicago, IL – A Chicago man is facing felony charges after Illinois State Police say an alleged road rage incident escalated into an expressway shooting over the weekend.
According to the Illinois State Police (ISP), the incident occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 18, on the ramp from Interstate 55 southbound to Interstate 94 northbound in Chicago.
Investigators said the shooting occurred during what they described as a suspected road rage incident. Authorities allege the suspect fired a weapon at another vehicle, striking it. No injuries were reported.
Troopers quickly identified and located the suspect vehicle, according to ISP. Authorities arrested Marcellus Crockrom, 24, of Chicago, and recovered a firearm during the investigation.
On Monday, July 20, Illinois State Police presented the case to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, which approved charges against Crockrom.
According to ISP, Crockrom has been charged with Attempted Murder (Class X Felony) and Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm (Class 1 Felony). He remains in custody pending his first court appearance.
The allegations against Crockrom have been made by law enforcement, and the charges are not evidence of guilt. He is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
Illinois State Police also reminded motorists to avoid engaging with aggressive drivers. Anyone who believes they are being followed or threatened during a road rage incident should call 911 or safely report the incident to the nearest law enforcement agency.
