Norman, OK – A tornado watch has been expanded to include much of northern and central New Jersey as well as New York City and portions of eastern and central New York, with the threat of severe thunderstorms continuing through 9 p.m. EDT Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Tornado Watch 507 remains in effect until 9 p.m. for 21 counties in New Jersey and 25 counties in New York. A tornado watch means atmospheric conditions are favorable for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms to develop. It does not mean a tornado has been confirmed.
In New Jersey, the watch includes Atlantic, Bergen, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Essex, Gloucester, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Passaic, Salem, Somerset, Sussex, Union, and Warren counties.
In New York, the watch includes the five boroughs of New York City—Bronx, Kings (Brooklyn), New York (Manhattan), Queens, and Richmond (Staten Island)—along with Nassau, Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam, Dutchess, Sullivan, Ulster, Columbia, Broome, Chenango, Delaware, Fulton, Greene, Herkimer, Madison, Montgomery, Oneida, Otsego, and Schoharie counties.
Residents across the watch area should remain alert for rapidly changing weather this afternoon and evening. Storms may produce tornadoes, destructive wind gusts, large hail, frequent lightning, and torrential rainfall, creating hazardous travel conditions.
People are encouraged to monitor trusted weather sources throughout the evening and be prepared to seek shelter immediately if a tornado warning is issued for their location.
