Billings, Montana – Travel along I-90 could become hazardous by late Thursday night as rain quickly changes to snow and strong winds reduce visibility across south central Montana.
According to the National Weather Service in Billings, moderate to heavy snow will develop Thursday night and continue through Friday night, with the highest totals expected southeast and east of Billings, including Sheridan, Lodge Grass, and Miles City. Snowfall in these could reach several inches, with localized higher totals.
Winds will intensify as the system moves through, with gusts between 30 and 40 mph across much of the region and up to 50 mph near the Bighorn foothills. These conditions may lead to blowing and drifting snow, especially along I-90 between Livingston, Billings, and Sheridan.
Communities including Red Lodge, Columbus, and Hysham could see rapidly deteriorating road conditions, particularly overnight into the Friday morning commute. Wet roads will freeze as temperatures drop, increasing the risk of slick travel.
Residents are urged to prepare for winter driving conditions and monitor updates as advisories could be upgraded. Impacts will continue through Friday night before conditions begin to improve.
